Abstract:Interactive medical image segmentation refers to the accurate segmentation of the target of interest through interaction (e.g., click) between the user and the image. It has been widely studied in recent years as it is less dependent on abundant annotated data and more flexible than fully automated segmentation. However, current studies have not fully explored user-provided prompt information (e.g., points), including the knowledge mined in one interaction, and the relationship between multiple interactions. Thus, in this paper, we introduce a novel framework equipped with prompt enhancement, called PE-MED, for interactive medical image segmentation. First, we introduce a Self-Loop strategy to generate warm initial segmentation results based on the first prompt. It can prevent the highly unfavorable scenarios, such as encountering a blank mask as the initial input after the first interaction. Second, we propose a novel Prompt Attention Learning Module (PALM) to mine useful prompt information in one interaction, enhancing the responsiveness of the network to user clicks. Last, we build a Time Series Information Propagation (TSIP) mechanism to extract the temporal relationships between multiple interactions and increase the model stability. Comparative experiments with other state-of-the-art (SOTA) medical image segmentation algorithms show that our method exhibits better segmentation accuracy and stability.
Abstract:Deep learning highly relies on the quantity of annotated data. However, the annotations for 3D volumetric medical data require experienced physicians to spend hours or even days for investigation. Self-supervised learning is a potential solution to get rid of the strong requirement of training data by deeply exploiting raw data information. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised learning framework for volumetric medical images. Specifically, we propose a context restoration task, i.e., Rubik's cube++, to pre-train 3D neural networks. Different from the existing context-restoration-based approaches, we adopt a volume-wise transformation for context permutation, which encourages network to better exploit the inherent 3D anatomical information of organs. Compared to the strategy of training from scratch, fine-tuning from the Rubik's cube++ pre-trained weight can achieve better performance in various tasks such as pancreas segmentation and brain tissue segmentation. The experimental results show that our self-supervised learning method can significantly improve the accuracy of 3D deep learning networks on volumetric medical datasets without the use of extra data.
Abstract:Angle closure glaucoma (ACG) is a more aggressive disease than open-angle glaucoma, where the abnormal anatomical structures of the anterior chamber angle (ACA) may cause an elevated intraocular pressure and gradually leads to glaucomatous optic neuropathy and eventually to visual impairment and blindness. Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT) imaging provides a fast and contactless way to discriminate angle closure from open angle. Although many medical image analysis algorithms have been developed for glaucoma diagnosis, only a few studies have focused on AS-OCT imaging. In particular, there is no public AS-OCT dataset available for evaluating the existing methods in a uniform way, which limits the progress in the development of automated techniques for angle closure detection and assessment. To address this, we organized the Angle closure Glaucoma Evaluation challenge (AGE), held in conjunction with MICCAI 2019. The AGE challenge consisted of two tasks: scleral spur localization and angle closure classification. For this challenge, we released a large data of 4800 annotated AS-OCT images from 199 patients, and also proposed an evaluation framework to benchmark and compare different models. During the AGE challenge, over 200 teams registered online, and more than 1100 results were submitted for online evaluation. Finally, eight teams participated in the onsite challenge. In this paper, we summarize these eight onsite challenge methods and analyze their corresponding results in the two tasks. We further discuss limitations and future directions. In the AGE challenge, the top-performing approach had an average Euclidean Distance of 10 pixel in scleral spur localization, while in the task of angle closure classification, all the algorithms achieved the satisfactory performances, especially, 100% accuracy rate for top-two performances.
