Optimization of CF-mMIMO Systems for the Coexistence between eMBB+ and mMTC+: From Analytical to GNN-Aided Designs

This paper investigates uplink multiple access for the coexistence of enhanced mobile broadband+ (eMBB+) and massive machine-type communications+ (mMTC+) in terminal-centric cell-free massive MIMO (CF-mMIMO) systems. We propose a non-orthogonal scheme in which low-rate mMTC+ transmissions are spread across the time-frequency grid shared with eMBB+ users, enabling efficient resource reuse. In the presence of imperfect channel state information, we derive closed-form expressions for the achievable rates of both services based solely on statistical channel knowledge. For mMTC+ devices, the analysis also incorporates finite blocklength (FBL) modeling to capture short-packet transmissions. To support heterogeneous service requirements, we formulate a power-control problem that maximizes the minimum energy efficiency of mMTC+ devices subject to quality-of-service constraints on eMBB+ users. The resulting nonconvex problem is solved via sequential fractional programming, accounting for both the Shannon and FBL regimes. To enable real-time operation, we further propose a graph neural network (GNN) with multi-head attention to approximate the model-based solution. Constraint satisfaction during training is enforced via an augmented Lagrangian loss. Numerical results demonstrate effective multiplexing of the two data services and show that the proposed GNN algorithm achieves near-optimal performance with a significantly lower computational complexity.

Learning Optimal Linear Precoding for Cell-Free Massive MIMO with GNN

We develop a graph neural network (GNN) to compute, within a time budget of 1 to 2 milliseconds required by practical systems, the optimal linear precoder (OLP) maximizing the minimal downlink user data rate for a Cell-Free Massive MIMO system - a key 6G wireless technology. The state-of-the-art method is a bisection search on second order cone programming feasibility test (B-SOCP) which is a magnitude too slow for practical systems. Our approach relies on representing OLP as a node-level prediction task on a graph. We construct a graph that accurately captures the interdependence relation between access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs), and the permutation equivariance of the Max-Min problem. Our neural network, named OLP-GNN, is trained on data obtained by B-SOCP. We tailor the OLP-GNN size, together with several artful data preprocessing and postprocessing methods to meet the runtime requirement. We show by extensive simulations that it achieves near optimal spectral efficiency in a range of scenarios with different number of APs and UEs, and for both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight radio propagation environments.

Unsupervised Graph-based Learning Method for Sub-band Allocation in 6G Subnetworks

In this paper, we present an unsupervised approach for frequency sub-band allocation in wireless networks using graph-based learning. We consider a dense deployment of subnetworks in the factory environment with a limited number of sub-bands which must be optimally allocated to coordinate inter-subnetwork interference. We model the subnetwork deployment as a conflict graph and propose an unsupervised learning approach inspired by the graph colouring heuristic and the Potts model to optimize the sub-band allocation using graph neural networks. The numerical evaluation shows that the proposed method achieves close performance to the centralized greedy colouring sub-band allocation heuristic with lower computational time complexity. In addition, it incurs reduced signalling overhead compared to iterative optimization heuristics that require all the mutual interfering channel information. We further demonstrate that the method is robust to different network settings.
